Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius & Herculaneum - Full day

Can’t decide which archaeological site to visit? How about both! And the Culprit!

At about 1pm, August 24, AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted violently. By the end of the following day, thousands of people were dead and the flourishing Roman cities of Pompeii & Hercualneum had dissappeared beneath tons of ash, pumice and solidified mud.

The excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum, by contrast, offer an intact vision of daily life in a Roman society in all its aspects. They have produced not only many treasures, but also many less precious objects extremely useful for the understanding of everyday life during the years of the Roman empire. In the buildings of these towns - from the monumental to the most simple - the ancient world appears in all its complexity, with great clarity.

This tour also offers a fun new way to experience Mt. Vesuvius – Mainland Europe's only live volcano.

Before starting your climb we transfer you onto a 4x4 (this is public transport so will not be private). Unused for decades this newly rediscovered road twists and turns up the green and rocky sides of Mount Vesuvius through the National Park. ** Please note that this route is very bumpy and not advisable for anyone with a severe bad back or pregnant ladies - we do have an alternative route so please mention in your reservation.

After a 20 minute drive in your military style 4X4 you reach the 1050 metre mark and are given time to climb to the crater. The uphill walk, depending on your speed, takes about 25 minutes – Comfortable, closed in shoes must be worn. Once at the crater you have an English speaking guide who will offer you an insight into this amazing volcano. You can walk about a third of the way around the crater where you can see inside, whilst enjoying spectacular views over the bay of Naples, even looking down on Pompeii which was destroyed by Vesuvius!!!

Your place on the 4x4 vehicle, entrance to the crater and the English speaking guide at the top is all included. As stated above we do have an alternative route where we can drive you up the public (less bumpy) road followed by a 30 minute walk on a different path where a bit more walking is involved. Please email us if you have any concerns.

No stop in Italy is complete without a traditional homemade pasta lunch; your private driver on your request will suggest a fantastic restaurant with true Italian hospitality or we have this suggestionOPTIONAL STOP FOR LUNCH … Heading in to the national park of Mt.Vesuvius we stop at ‘Vesuvio Cantina’ a local winery. On arrival the owners will take you on a tour of the vineyards and wine cellar. Then whilst enjoying a spectacular view - on one side the island of Capri and a backdrop of the dominating slopes of Mt. Vesuvius you are invited to taste their best wines and enjoy a relaxing light lunch, all set in the middle of the vineyard. Starter includes local salami, cheese and bruschetta, followed by spaghetti (produced locally) prepared with a fresh tomato sauce made from tomatoes grown on the slopes of the volcano; and to finish a typical Neapolitan dessert - Pastiera Cake. All served along with 5 different wines red and white, rose prosecco and apricot grappa. Cost of lunch and wine tasting is Euro 25 per person and must be reserved in advance.
